I had an odd experience when I initially started in again on Country Driving last week. One by one, those foreign book reviewers fell into this trap. Me on the other hand, I'd like a new Cherokee for $12k. Now, he said, too many heavy Chinese trucks drive it and maintenance is lax. The book is about China and includes driving, but it is not really about a road trip. In the spirit of Kerouac and Steinbeck, the celebrated travel writer fulfills a childhood fantasy: to drive across his native land. When you first pick up Country Driving there's the danger that you might mistake it for a book about driving culture or a “road trip” book. By Peter Hessler is a book by a magazine writer who lived in China for several years.
